Château de Villandry

The first km of Betterbuxus® planted in the gardens of Château de Villandry.

Château de Villandry is a 16th century castle on the Loire (France) famous for its beautiful Renaissance gardens. These gardens were recreated by Joachim Carvallo, the great-grandfather of the current owner, and are based on old designs. Especially the decorative vegetable garden is very popular.
Thanks to the dedication and passion of the Carvallo family, we can still enjoy one of the most beautiful Renaissance gardens in Europe today.

At the end of 2015, the current owner, Mr Henri Carvallo, invited us to visit the gardens and to give advice on the many Buxus plantations on the estate. He had heard that we were breeding in Buxus. Pending the availability of these new hybrids, a number of areas in the vegetable garden have already been replaced by the Buxus microphylla Faulkner. This replacement was carried out by their own professional gardening team, which gave in a good result.

As a result of this close cooperation, the first hybrids of Betterbuxus®, the new brand name, were planted in Villandry at the end of October 2019. One of the nine square sections in the vegetable garden, about 1 km, was bordered with the Betterbuxus® ‘Heritage’.

In 2020, the other Betterbuxus® hybrids, ‘Renaissance’ and ‘Babylon Beauty’, were provided so that we have a nice overview of the 3 varieties available for low hedges. In 2022 the replacement of the more than 100-year-old Buxus sempervirens in the “Love Garden” was started with Betterbuxus® ‘Skylight’

Betterbuxus® hybrids are resistant varieties developed by Herplant BVBA
and are resistant to Box Blight (Calonectria /Cylindrocladium).
